1. Go to the theater
Whether you want to see the classics like the nutcracker or a orchestra’s Christmas concert, or want to finally go see Hamilton, making a special trip to the theater can become a fantastic holiday tradition. I plan to visit the theater either in Palma or Amsterdam before the season is over.
2. Go to the movies
For the first time, well, ever, the Nutcracker is being made into a holiday film. You can see that, and also see some other great movies coming out. I think Instant Family looks really great and can’t wait to see it.
3. Find and tour a local light show
In every major city as well as smaller communities, there are areas known for decorating with holiday lights to unbelievable levels. Find an area like this near you, and plan a magical evening.
4. Visit a Christmas Market
Even if you aren’t in Europe, you can often find local artists’ craft markets to buy some thoughtful homemade gifts or get inspiration for your next crafting project. These markets can be a great group activity or way to connect with local artists.
5. Go Ice Skating
This is a fun tradition that you can do at home, or in a new city each year. For the full experience, go skating after dark in an area lit with holiday lights! This is a special holiday tradition you can do year after year.
6. Plan a January getaway
Whether need a weekend getaway or can take a week or more, these destinations are sure to beat the January blahs and make life a little better. Obviously some of these destinations are location specific, but you can use my weekend getaway guide to plan something from where ever you are. Here are the best deals I see right now:
- Fly from Philadelphia to San Francisco for $180 roundtrip in January
- Fly from Singapore to Athens for under $300 roundtrip in January to March and beyond
- Fly from New York to Paris roundtrip for under $600 in January, February and beyond
- New York to Rome for under $300, in February and March
- Chicago to Jordan for $445 in January through March
- San Diego to Shanghai for $431 in February or March
- There are also options to fly to London and Reykjavik for under $300 from many US cities

8. Dream hotels to consider
Depending on your destination, there are so many incredible hotels to consider, just to get your ideas flowing. Feel free to email me with your target destination, and I am happy to help you pick the best accommodation for your budget!
The Fairmont Bermuda is located near the famous horseshoe bay. Score great deals during the off season and enjoy a variety of water sports, and some of the best golf in the Atlantic region.
Stay in the Hilton Barbados. This incredible resort is the perfect launching place for your Barbados vacation. If the price is too much, consider moving to an airbnb after a few days.
Stay at the Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok for an experience of total luxury while exploring the capital of Thailand.
Visit the Four Season Hong Kong. They made me a pizza that had about 6 fresh artichoke hearts on it. There are beautiful views of the harbor, and it is also connected to the large mall in central Hong Kong. This is definitely a luxury experience!
