Last week I reminded you of the brilliance of the weekend getaway. Today’s post is the guide to the weekend getaway for nature lovers. And by nature lovers, I mean everyone who feels revitalized after some time outside.
If you love nature, a day outside can make you feel totally revitalizing. Whether it is a hike in the forest, a day at the beach, surfing or paragliding, outdoor activities can be a great way to see more of your new location and experience the natural beauty of the area.
Once great way to get out in nature is to plan active weekend getaways. This can be a weekend trip from home after the work and school week finishes, or an active weekend within a longer vacation. If you are ready to explore, here are the steps to take to make the most of your time.
How to Plan an Active Weekend Getaway for Those Who Love to be in Nature
1. Brainstorm activities
First, think of activities within reach of your home or vacation destination. Be sure to think outside of the box. Always wanted to try a ropes course? Interested in parasailing? The first step is to brainstorm 5-10 activities you would love to do. This can also, of course, include usual favorites like hiking, biking, or swimming.
2. Find the best opportunities
Next, consider what the area is known for. Maybe you are going to France and want to take a biking tour of wine country. Perhaps you are going to a beach destination and want to try sailing. Make a list of where you could do the activities you choose in step one. You may find that a few aren’t available in your area. That’s ok. This is your new list.
If you are planning a weekend getaway from home, this list becomes even more important. These activities can form the basis for regular weekend getaways.
3. Research options
Once you have your list of options of favorite activities and where you can do them, narrow it down to your top 3 favorite activities. This will allow you to plan out your weekend. You can also research various options of vendors, companies, or places to do activities.
For example, if you plan to go hiking in the mountains, you can research different trails and hike lengths. You can also look into hiking groups in the area to see if you’d like to join them. Once you’re set on your top three options, you can ready to finalize your weekend.
4. Plan your weekend
For this step, you will have to look at the amount of time each activity will take including transportation. Perhaps you plan to take a 3-hour hike and need an hour roundtrip to drive there. Usually guided activities list whether they are half day or full day.
The maximum you could do on a weekend would be 4 half-day activities, or two full day activities, but it’s usually better to think of leaving yourself a little down time between activities. On the basis of the time allowed for your activities, you can map out your weekend.
5. Get out there and enjoy
Once you have your plan, make any bookings or arrangements necessary. Be sure to allow a little extra time in case you get lost or need to stop on the way to your destination. Enjoy the amazing power of nature.
7. Allow for change of plans
Of course, it’s good to check the weather before planning your weekend. But sometimes, the weather changes suddenly putting a damper on your plans. In that case, have a backup plan or an alternate activity you’ve wanted to try instead. Or, you can prepare with the right gear for any weather and venture out.
8. Great weekend combinations
Here are a few of the active weekends I’ve done in the past that have been especially fun to try:
- Hiking and forest hot springs on day 1; swimming and paddle boarding on day 2
- Kayak tour on day 1; surf lesson on day 2
- Long hike on day 1; bike tour through town on day 2
- Ice skating in a Christmas Market on day 1; Free walking tour of town on day 2
- Swimming in hot springs on day 1; countryside bike tour on day 2
- Paddle boarding on day 1; sailing on day 2
- Waterfall hike on day 1; mountain lake swim on day 2
In conclusion, a weekend getaway can be a great way to be revitalized in nature and experience the beauty and majesty of nature either near your home or on vacation. It doesn’t take long to plan, and is actually really fun to think about and plan ahead. Suddenly, every weekend can become a great adventure.
